NIV, Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible, Imitation Leather: Bringing to Life the Ancient World of Scripture

$49.99 $39.99

Study Bibles often try to tell you what to think or get lost in theological discussion. Others give you disjointed technical data. This one focuses on providing you with relevant background. I consider it one of the best for teachers/preachers, though I continue to recommend that you have study Bibles that are from different perspectives. Good companions to this one would be the New Oxford Annotated Bible (more technical but sometimes less relevant; also more liberal) and/or the New Interpreter’s Study Bible (both a bit more liberal and more theological).

My review is at NIV Cultural Study Bible – Hebrews.

My additional notes on the print edition.

The Bible was originally written to an ancient people removed from us by thousands of years and thousands of miles. For us to hear the Scriptures as they did, we need a window into their world.

The NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible, with notes from Dr. John H. Walton (Wheaton College) in the Old Testament and Dr. Craig S. Keener (Asbury Theological Seminary) in the New Testament, brings to life the ancient world of Scripture for modern readers.
